Can We Talk To The Dead, Are They Actually The Loved Ones, and Is It Biblical?

Many people and various cultures around the world condone praying to the dead or loved ones that have gone before us. Many religions include; Roman Catholicism, Hindu, and Mormonism. These religions do share commonalities of allowing dead or loved ones to intercede in their prayers to help them in their spiritual journey to be close to their God(s). As a Christian, that worries me, because it opens the doors to evil spirits into their lives even though they may not realize their true nature and who they truly are (demons). To further determine if praying or having the loved ones intercedes their prayers are biblical, let’s look to the Scriptures to determine if God allows it or not.

Let’s take a look at the book of Ecclesiastes in chapters 9 verse 5 it says:

Ecclesiastes 9:5 KJV – For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in anything that is done under the sun.

In the Ecclesiastes, the departed spirits who used to be a living people will die in their lifetime. After they have died, their spirits departed from their physical bodies and they will not be allowed to talk to the living or view anything in the physical realm. To further understand the concept, let’s take a look in Luke 16:28-31, which goes over the actual conversation between the rich man and Abraham regarding warning the rich man’s brethren to repent (Greek = Matanioea – A Change of Mind Strong #ID: 3341).

Luke 16:28-31 KJV – 28 For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. 29 Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. 30 And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. 31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

The above passage shown, the rich man wanted Abraham to send Lazarus (spirit was in Abraham’s Bosom) to warn the rich man’s five brothers to repent (change of mind) and that not to come to the place of torment of where the rich man is currently living in. However, Abraham said no, it is not how it works in the spiritual realm. It is a one time deal and that decision has been made by the individual and it is eternal. Abraham said that they have Moses and the prophets (written Word) to understand the repercussions of the dead and how to avoid going to eternal torment by simply believing on Jesus Christ’s complete work at the cross through His blood (purged all sins). Abraham Bosom is a temporary holding place for the righteous that was online before Jesus’ resurrection from the dead. The reason being, because Jesus has not died for their sins at their current period of time.

Let’s also look in David’s situation where his child was very sick and died. David wanted to see his child badly. However, he said that he would be with the child in the after-life because the dead CANNOT go to the living and vice-versa, which is in agreement with Luke 16:28-31 and Ecclesiastes 9:5. In 2 Samuel 12:23, it says:

2 Samuel 12:32 KJV – But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me.

David wanted to visit his child but he knew that it is not possible to converse with the dead and vice-versa. When a child dies, the child goes to the presence of the Lord (age of accountability) and there is NO DEAD CHILD LEFT BEHIND on this earth! God (Yahweh) is merciful, faithful, and gracious.

Saul summoned Samuel, the prophet from the dead through the witch of Endor.

Here is the summary; that the dead cannot communicate back and vice-versa to the living and is not allowed according to Scriptures. The dead of the departed loved ones are not aware of the things done in the physical realm nor would they be able to. Currently, they are in a separate place known as either Heaven or Sheol (holding area for the unsaved). Abraham’s Bosom no longer exists, because Jesus let the OT saints out from the grave. They cannot talk to the living, the living has the “prophets, Moses, and the writings” that they can read and ask God for assistance in spiritually discerning how the spiritual realm works and how to be saved through faith in Jesus’s precious blood and his complete works at the cross.

A question that most often is brought up is; are the people that others are talking to really their dead loved ones? Well, let’s take a look in Scriptures staring in the book of Samuel where Saul consulted the witch of Endor to inquire Samuel, the prophet, who has past on into the afterlife.

1 Samuel 28:19 KJV – Moreover the Lord will also deliver Israel with thee into the hand of the Philistines: and to morrow shalt thou and thy sons be with me: the Lord also shall deliver the host of Israel into the hand of the Philistines.

The above verse talks about what would happen to Saul and his army regarding the situations with the Philistines at that time. This indicates that this is a one-time only event that God would allow the actual person, Samuel the prophet, to come up to speak to Saul personally through the medium. At that time, the dead were in the heart of the earth called, Sheol, and the righteous saints are in Abraham’s Bosom. The clue here in the above verse is; tomorrow, you shall and your sons are with me, is referring to Saul and his sons’ future deaths after the battle. Keep in mind that this was many hundred years before Jesus Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection! This was before Jesus sacrificed His life and blood to purged all sins of the world; past, present, and future.

Now in Scriptures, God forbids in communicating to the dead. The reason why, because the dead are not really the dead loved ones, but in fact, they are really demons that were required to roam around within the confined of this physical realm as part of their judgment. It removes the focuses on Jesus Christ to the evil spirits, which is spiritual adultery. Let’s take a look at the origin of demons and determine if they are angels or if they are something uglier and sinister in origin.

1 Enoch 15:4-11 though ye were holy [Fallen Watchers], spiritual, living the eternal life, you have defiled yourselves with the blood of women, and have begotten (children) with the blood of flesh [Fallen Watchers begotten giants, which are called, Nephilim], and, as the children of men, have lusted after flesh and blood as those also do who die and perish. 5. Therefore have I given them wives also that they might impregnate them, and beget children by them, that thus nothing might be wanting to them on earth. 6. But you were formerly spiritual, living the eternal life, and immortal for all generations of the world [Watchers were angels that dwell in the eternal realm with God]. 7. And therefore I have not appointed wives for you; for as for the spiritual ones of the heaven, in heaven is their dwelling. 8. And now, the giants, who are produced from the spirits and flesh, shall be called evil spirits upon the earth [Demons origins not angels], and on the earth shall be their dwelling [judgment for the giants which became demons or evil spirits]. 9. Evil spirits have proceeded from their bodies; because they are born from men, ⌈⌈and⌉⌉ from the holy Watchers is their beginning and primal origin; they shall be evil spirits on earth, and evil spirits shall they be called. [10. As for the spirits of heaven, in heaven shall be their dwelling, but as for the spirits of the earth which were born upon the earth, on the earth shall be their dwelling.] 11. And the spirits of the giants afflict, oppress, destroy, attack, do battle, and work destruction on the earth, and cause trouble: they take no food, but nevertheless hunger and thirst, and cause offenses. And these spirits shall rise up against the children of men and against the women because they have proceeded from them[Cause and the judgment required to be on the evil spirits].

The book of Enoch expounds what the Sons of God [B’nai Eloyim] did to the daughters of men, which caused much evil through the offspring of the unintended creations, such as the Nephilim (i.e. Titans, Satyrs, and etc), that later became known as the evil spirits after they were wiped from the earth through Noah’s flood, which correlated with Genesis 6:1-5

Nephilim – Half Human and Half Angel (Offspring of the Watchers)

In summary, the evil spirits roam around the earth and torment mankind until the end of the age. It is forbidden to talk to the spirit guides or familiar spirits because it is a departure from the truth, which is Jesus Christ. God is a jealous God and there should be no other gods besides Him.

Exodus 34:14 KJV – For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God:

God is a jealous God and he does not want anyone to have any part with false gods even the angels and various other entities that were created beings. He wants people to focus on Jesus Christ.

Anyways, that is all I have for you and I do not want you to be deceived and dabbing into these magical arts and communications with the dead. I care so much about you and your safety and would love you to know Jesus Christ, the Savior of the whole world, who will never leave you nor forsake you. Jesus will always be with you and love to have a strong relationship with you! 🙂

Closing Thoughts and Desires

If you want to be saved today, the only thing that you need to do is to hear/read the Gospel of Jesus, repent of what you used to believe in (change of mind – Matenioea Greek), and a belief towards Jesus Christ for salvation.

Verse Gospel – 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 – Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: 5

Jesus Christ is the Lamb of God who shed His Blood that purged ALL Sins of the world.

Verse of God’s will for mankind to do to be saved – John 6:40 KJV – And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.

Once you have believed on Jesus Christ for salvation (Gospel), you are born again through the Spirit at the moment of belief and cannot be unborn or lost. Jesus keeps you saved and will never let you go. How cool and awesome is that?
